My JMT packing Goals:
- Have the right stuff to thrive/survive 215+ miles of hiking.
- 50lbs or less - trust me 50lbs is more than you EVER want to carry on your back.
- Have enough food to last 21 days - heh. I hope you do a better job than we did on this one :(
Take's Packing list:
Clothes
- T-shirts x2 (Icebreaker)
- Really only wore 1 the entire time. #dontjudgeme
- Mid-layer fleece (Patagonia R1)
- Insulating layer/down (Mountain Hardware- Ghost Whisperer)
- Rainshell (Marmot Storm)
- Rain Pants (Mountain Hardware)
- Underwear x3 (Ex-officio boxers)
- Scarf/bandana (Buff)
- Pants (Outlier - Slim Dungarees)
- Shorts (Outlier - New Way Shorts)
- Beanie (Vans)
- Socks x3 (Darntough/Icebreaker/Smartwool)
- RIP Darntough & Smartwool -I'm looking at you Catherine!
I've tried and tested mostly all these clothes throughout Asia and to no surprise, I had no real issues with any of these. I would suggest on getting a lighter rain shell and perhaps ditching the rain pants, but we got lucky and had little rain.
Shoes
- Boots (Lowa Renegades)
- Flip-flops (Rainbows)
I have mixed feelings about the Lowa Renegades. They're a solid boot and left me blister-free for the first 7 days... then it was all downhill from there. If I were to do it again, I'd get a light-weight trail runner - but if you need more support, the Lowas are still a solid choice. At the end of the day, just make sure you really put some miles into your shoes before bringing them on the trail - Chris almost had to bail out of the JMT b/c of his boots.
BRING CROCS. I couldn't find my Crocs in my last second packing, so I had to opt out for rainbows. HUGE mistake- there were atleast 100 times where I thought "Damn, I wish I had my crocs"
Other Hiking Essentials
- Sunglasses/Glasses
- Moleskin Padding
- Black Diamond Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles
- Leatherman Multitool (Skeletool CX)
- Big Agnes 15F sleeping bag
- Big Agnes Q-core SL sleeping pad
- Thermarest Camping Pillow
- Jetboil + Fuel
- Double Rainbow Tarptent
- Travel Towel (REI MultiTowel)
I couldn't be happier with everything I brought from above. I'd like to highlight the Double Rainbow Tent (Chris' tent) - super light, easy set up and perfect for 2 people. Also, Bring a camping pillow, it'll take some room, but it'll be 1000% worth it after you're dead exhausted.
Pack
- Osprey Atmos 65L
- Osprey M/L Pack Cover
- Dry Bag (Sea to Summit)
- Packing cubes (Eagle Creek)
Picking the right pack for the JMT is just as important as the boots. You need to make sure that the pack is properly fitted and feels good on your back. The Osprey Atmos was great, but was a bit heavy after comparing my equipment to some pro-hikers. If I were to do it again, I'd pick up a Cuban-fiber pack. Every ounce counts when you're carrying it for 21 days - the Osprey had great weight distribution and was sturdy as hell though!
Electronics
- Iphone 6 - unlocked on TMobile
- Kindle Paperwhite
- External Battery (Anker)
- Headlamp (Black Diamond Storm)
- Sony RX-100 MK2
- I really can not recommend this camera enough!
- Headphones (Bose)
- Watch (G-shock)
- Solar Panel Charger
- Misc. Charging cords
Don't expect to get ANY reception with TMobile while on the trail. Bring the Iphone for the photos and music + the Anker charger to give it some juice. I bought a solar panel charger (Goalzero) and dont even bother- it's a useless 1-2lbs of weight.
Toiletries
- Toothbruh
- Toothpaste
Went real minimalistic and I don't regret it. Who needs soap, when you can jump in lakes...? #dontjudgeme
FooD
- I'll come back to this section. There's alot I have to type on this subject
